What to do when you’re overwhelmed and/or stressed

Olivia Gomez, Staff Reporter

Whether you’re stressed because of school, work, or just life in general, you’re going to get through it. You will figure it out even if it doesn’t seem like that in the moment. Life can get overwhelming, but it’ll get better. Here are some things that help me in times of stress:

  1. Taking a warm shower
  • It doesn’t necessarily have to be warm, just find a temperature you’re comfortable with and take a break. Let yourself relax even if its just for a moment. If you’re a bath person, that can work just as well or even better. Listening to your favorite music while doing this can help you relax or unwind.
  1. Reach out or talk to someone
  • Its never good to bottle up your feelings as it can cause an even more overwhelming sensation. Reach out to a friend or anyone that you trust and let them know how you’re feeling. Even if there’s nothing they can do about it, it might still feel good to get it out of your system and talk about it.
  1. Journal
  • If you don’t want to reach out for one reason or another, journaling or writing your problems out can help. This can act as another outlet for everything your feeling and can ease the sense of overwhelming. You can journal and write in any way that you want, its just for you so it can be as messy or neat as you want.
  1. Change your environment
  • This can make a big difference by forcing yourself to break out of an overwhelming and anxious loop. A change of scenery can help ground yourself by taking a step back from the situation in order to reevaluate it. This can help to create new ideas of ways to deal with things and help yourself.
  1. Listen to music
  • Listening to music can help you get your mind off of certain things that may be stressing you out. As a big music person, I find music to comforting in times of stress. Find what music calms you down or distracts you and take a moment to listen. Focus on the music and just listen.
  1. Apps/Games
  • With technology, there are so many more resources that can be used to your advantage. There are specific apps and/or games that have been created to either relieve stress or to help with the coping of overwhelming or anxious feelings. There are even journaling apps that are made specifically to be an outlet for thoughts and feelings.

Although these might not help, that doesn’t mean nothing will. There are still so many other things that you can find that may be useful. There’s something for everyone and what helps you might not help your best friend. Its all a matter of personal preference and what works for you.
