Every year people around the world celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. It’s a holiday that honors ,St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. This holiday has grown from a religious holiday to a celebration that is celebrated across the world. Parades, leprechauns, shamrocks and even the color green represent a big part of the holiday’s culture. In history, St. Patrick is seen as the reason Christianity was brought to the island. He used the shamrock to explain the idea of the holy trinity; the shamrock is important because it is now seen as the symbol of St. Patrick’s day which is why many wear green and shamrocks on their clothing to celebrate this holiday. A very popular tradition that is done every year in Chicago isĀ to dye the Chicago River green to celebrate Irish heritage. Food also plays an important role in celebrating; many celebrate by eating a dish originating in Ireland, which is corned beef and cabbage and it is loved by many. Although the holiday originated in Ireland, it is also largely celebrated in the United States and ironically hosts the largest celebrations, primarily in high Irish populated areas like Boston and New York City. They host parades and festivals. The attractions attract more and more visitors’ year after year. St. Patrick’s Day is now more than a day. It is a day where many people from different backgrounds come together and celebrate and enjoy the traditions of St. Patrick’s Day. Whether you are visiting an event, enjoying a meal with family and friends, or even just wearing green, you can celebrate with someone.
