Earlier this week, a severe cold storm swept through Frankfort and the surrounding area, bringing freezing temperatures, icy conditions, and snowfall that directly impacted life at Lincoln-Way East High School.
As temperatures dropped into single digits, and even below zero, the district made the decision to close school on January 23 (Friday) to keep students and staff safe. Many students welcomed the e-learning day, taking advantage of the shortened schedule to relax, catch up on work, or sleep in.
The storm also impacted after school activities and transportation. Several clubs and sports practices were shortened or canceled due to unsafe travel and also buses experienced minor delays on Monday as roads remained slick during the early morning hours. Student-athletes were forced indoors, while some workouts and training were postponed altogether.
When school reopened, the cold was still noticeable all across. snowy patches remained in the parking lots and on sidewalks, which were salted early in the day to help prevent slips and injuries.
“Icy roads made the morning drive longer,” said junior Alex DiFiore, describing the drive back to school on Monday.
With winter conditions expected to continue, students are encouraged to dress warmly, stay alert for weather updates, and—of course—keep hoping for another snowy day.
