So many people celebrate Halloween, but does anyone ever really think about where it came from and the story behind how it was created? Halloween was a pagan celebration from the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain that was near the the end of summer and the harvest as well as the beginning of winter. It was to ward off evil spirits and ghosts they thought would return around this time; while doing this, they lit fires and wore different costumes. It was celebrated on October 31st from sunset to November 1st to sundown which made it the end end of summer as well as the harvest. The Celts believed that that night the boundary of the two worlds, the living and dead, bled into each other. As well as lighting fires and wearing costumes the Celts also performed rituals to ward off the evil spirits. The costumes weren’t regular costumes that you would see this day in age but instead they wore animal skins. They also wore masks to avoid getting noticed about ghosts and evil spirits. In the pagan harvest used orange and black to represent the summer of death. In the Middle Ages people carved turnips and potatoes to ward the spirits off. Even though these old traditions were to ward off evil spirits many people still believe Halloween is demonic.
