You may not know it but you could be living in one of Illinois’ most haunted towns! Since October is slowly coming to an end, let’s take a look at some of the most haunted/ spine chilling places in all of Illinois. Starting off in our very own, Chicago! Not only have there been suspected in Lincoln Park itself due to reports of voices, screaming, machine-gun fire, and phantom mists due to the St. Valentines Day massacre, but the most haunted being the “Couch Place” also known as “the alley of death.” This dark alley held the remains/ bodies of those who died in The Great Chicago Theater Disaster. It is here that cries, wails, and apparitions are said to haunt us to this day, which is why it’s still deemed one of the most haunted places in Chicago. Chicago is also known for its “Murder Castle,” but that’s a story for another day. Now, we could jump into Aurora which is home of the Two Brothers Roundhouse, which is known for a dark history that resists illumination as mysteriously as the shadowy ghosts that stalk its corridors. There are many reports of voices, footsteps, and sounds of hammering in the night said to be from the spirits of the lost railroad workers. “Eerie ghost stories include a depthless hole where the devil lurks, a romantic rendezvous interrupted by a frightening specter, countless unnerving sightings of shadow people, a hallway where employees refuse to walk at night, and the sweet spirit of the late NFL great Walter Payton, who loves to watch guests enjoying the Roundhouse entertainment complex that is his legacy.” Or we can jump all the way to Naperville into the Naperville Cemetery located at the Naper Settlement. Here, there are numerous reports of supernatural encounters with eerie, ghost-like figures, as well as reports of strange sounds and just overall a sense of uneasiness. Or if your looking to just stay at home and share ghost stories, you can talk about the famous Resurrection Mary who has been reported to be haunting along Archer Avenue since the 1930s. However, don’t get her confused with our famous Bloody Mary who, according to legend, can be summoned within your very own home. While many of these are just urban legends, and only some may believe them, it’s a fun way to get in the Halloween spirit!
