Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last three years, you’ve probably heard of Artificial Intelligence or AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, or even Microsoft’s Copilot. AI isn’t just for cheating on your homework or creating images.
Some content creators, like GlorbWorldwide for their rap music and videos, Neuro-sama for her gaming videos, or even the well-known Kwebbelkop for his Minecraft videos, are just a few of the hundreds of thousands of AI creators. Researchers predict that the future of YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and many more platforms will be overrun by AI-generated content in the next few years, to the point where everyone will have personalized content created for them, or even have preexisting content like books or movies edited to match the personality of the viewer, rather than the current generalized “For You Page.” Yes, this kind of content may sound amazing for the endless amount of entertaining content ready for your consumption, but with all the benefits, there are negatives: this change could be the end of creativity, hundreds of professions, and originality as we know it.
The authenticity of content could be compromised, making us think twice about what’s real and what’s not. It’s scary how good deepfakes can be, not to mention how much better they will get in the future. Deepfakes could be the end of authentic news reporting. Imagine waking up early to go to school or work, and you turn on the TV and click on NBC live while enjoying your Honey Nut Cheerios, only to witness footage of your favorite celebrity ruining their career by making a joke about a rising controversy. You are shocked that they would ever say something like this, so naturally, you turn to the internet to confirm if it is true or not, and you see another video of this celebrity claiming they never said such a thing.
Now you’re unsure what to think, and you ask yourself: Is this video AI-generated or not? How the future of content consumption looks, now could be the last of not having to think twice on the content we consume and its authenticity.
