Remember the Ice Bucket Challenge from 2014? The viral trend where people dumped freezing water over their heads to raise awareness for ALS? Well, this year students at the University of Southern California (USC) brought it back with a new purpose, raising money and awareness for mental health. The now USC Ice Bucket Challenge keeps the ice bucket tradition alive but shifts the cause one which affects more college students, their mental wellbeing. Organized by a group of students, the event invited participants to get soaked and then nominate friends, all while donating to mental health services both on campus and in the greater Los Angeles area. The campaign quickly gained attention everywhere, especially on social media, just like it did in 2014, with students everywhere joining in. Videos continued to pop up all over TikTok and Instagram, giving the movement a fresh, Gen Z spin. The USC Ice Bucket Challenge has started real conversations about stress, anxiety, and the importance of seeking support. With finals and AP tests around the corner, the timing couldn’t be better.
