What is your favorite holiday? For most people, they would say “Christmas” or “Halloween”. But only a vast majority of people say that Easter is their favorite. Why? Well, Easter tends to be a holiday that is taken more as a religious holiday here in the United States. Although as a child it was associated with egg hunts and candy and the Easter Bunny, as you grow older, it more so acts as a religious gathering. But other than going to church to celebrate, what are some things that people do on Easter?
In the Pacific, many people celebrate by baking hot cross buns, but did you know that in Australia most people don’t use rabbits to associate with Easter because they are seen as pests? How funny! In Africa, specifically in Ethiopia, the people celebrate Fasika which is the 55 days leading up to Easter. On these days, people fast from eating meat and animal products. Heading over to Europe, most Europeans following the Orthodox religion celebrate Easter one to two weeks later than other people! This is because of the Julian calendar. It is also common to decorate an Easter tree with painted eggs, similar to what we do during Christmas time! Continuing in Europe, Poland has a very interesting tradition that has been happening since 1973! The volunteers of a town called Bessiéres gather to cook one giant omelet. This tradition began when Napolean, according to legends, was traveling south with his army and stopped in that town. They ate omelets and Napolean liked them so much that he asked the townspeople for eggs and they made a giant omelet. These traditions are crazy but so much goes into them each year.
