Global Warming

Maya Davis, Staff Reporter

Yes, you heard right-global warming is really happening and here’s why. Global warming occurs when carbon dioxide and other air pollutants and greenhouse gases collect in the atmosphere and absorb sunlight and solar radiation that have bounced off the earth’s surface. These pollutants are coming from Fossil fuel plants which is the biggest source of the pollution. Next, is coal burning plants and then transportation. These pollutants last a long time in the air which causes heat to get trapped on the earth’s surface causing an increase in heat. With all this said, we have started to make a change by cutting down emissions and using alternative fossil fuels. Scientists agree that the earth’s rising temperatures are fueling longer and hotter heat waves, more frequent droughts, heavier rainfall, and more powerful hurricanes. And in 2016, the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine announced that it’s now possible to confidently attribute certain weather events, like some heat waves, directly to climate change. Some worsening events that are caused by global warming are glacier melting, rising sea levels, new pests, heat waves, heavy downpours, and increased flooding. We’ve started to try and change climate change, but in order to avoid the worst effects of climate change, we need to do a lot more. We should try to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and start using clean energy instead. Shanan from LWE says,” she agrees that we should try to stop using so many pollutants and use clean energy efficient materials”. So, with that being said, try to recycle more and make sure you go yearly to get your car’s emission checked.
